The Notre Dame Museum is one of the most striking buildings in Strasbourg – The Gothic building combines elements of late Gothic and Renaissance. Initially, this building was not a museum, it served as a repository of church documents in Strasbourg. The building was called the Fund of the Virgin Mary, the first mention of it dates back to the 13th century, when the main part of the building was completed. The tasks of the foundation included the preservation of the drawings of the Strasbourg Cathedral, as well as many other churches in the city. In addition, the Foundation contained models of the interior decoration, some of which have survived to this day. The end of the 18th century, which brought the Great Revolution, changed the profile of this building. It now housed rescued statues from the Cathedral, which were ordered to be dropped, as well as many other architectural elements. Officially, the Jacobins opened here a museum of ancient sculptures and tapestries confiscated from churches, abbeys and houses of priests. In addition, a collection of valuable medieval tableware was placed here. By the 19th century, a society for the protection of historical monuments was created in Strasbourg, and miraculously survived stained glass windows, altars and whole parts of those scolded for revolutionary and military shocks of the temples. To date, the collection has been expanded by numerous donations from representatives of the noble families of Alsace in the form of sculptures and some paintings acquired by the museum from private collections around the world.
