The temple standing on this site dates back to the 12th century, when the monastery of Mary Magdalene was erected here. The holy monastery received repentant fallen women from all over Europe as nuns. This monastery served until 1470 and was destroyed by the French themselves, since it was not sufficiently fortified and was an easy target for enemy troops who could use the monastery as a base of support. Initially The church was built in the 15th century and was the clearest example of late Gothic architecture. But in 1904, Strasbourg was engulfed in a serious fire that destroyed the church almost to the ground. The decision was immediately made to reconstruct the church. Frescoes of the 15th century left after the fire can be seen in several corners of the main nave. In 1988, along with other buildings in the historical center of Strasbourg, the Church of St. Magdalene was included by UNESCO in the list of World Heritage of Humanity . The fate of the organ, which was first installed in 1716, is also interesting. For more than 70 years, it sounded during services in this church, but by the decision of the head of the city it was sold at the end of the 18th century to Germany. Until the beginning of the 20th century, there was no instrument in the church , and delivered after reconstruction was destroyed by a German bomb in 1944. The organ was completely reconstructed only in 1997. We also recommend reading Strasbourg Cathedral in France, Strasbourg resort Topic: Church of Saint Magdalene in France, resort of Strasbourg. |
