The first mention of the Strasbourg Botanical Garden dates back to 1619. Then there were the territory of the city Academy, later turned into a University, namely the building of the medical faculty. The windows of the faculty overlooked the abandoned cemetery of the destroyed monastery, and it was decided to create a Botanical Garden on this place.
In 1670, the first ever France census of plants. At that time, they counted about one and a half thousand. Until the Great Revolution, the garden grew and became a real treasury of knowledge about numerous plants, some of which were exotic for France. By the 1790s, the revolutionary situation in every possible way put pressure on the leadership of the garden. He was ordered to be destroyed more than once, as a relic of the past, but every time the orders were appealed in court. It was also possible to preserve the statues of the Strasbourg Cathedral that were later returned to their place.
Today the Botanical Garden is a repository of more than 15 thousand plant species.
