The main square of Graz is one of the most unusual and interesting squares in the whole world. It is located in the historic center of the city.

The square has a triangular shape. It is surrounded by several buildings that are of interest for their unusual combination of architectural styles. For example, on the square there is a town hall built in the 19th century, which is a vivid example of classicism. In the 17th century, the Landhaus building was built here, decorated with frescoes and creating a harmonious mixture of Rococo and Baroque.

One of the most famous sights of the square is the fountain, which is dedicated to Archduke John. The fountain is located in the very center of the square and represents the figure of a representative of the Habsburg dynasty, which is surrounded by four female figures, symbolizing the four rivers of Styria - Moore, Drau, Enns and Sann. Archduke John is highly revered in Graz, as during his reign the city achieved incredible prosperity, and this could not be repeated by any ruler.

The main square of Graz has been the center of social life for many centuries. Until the end of the 18th century, the square was a place for the execution of punishment. Here people guilty of minor violations were put to a pillory, locked in a shameful cage or forced to ride on a wooden donkey.
