The Granusturm in Aachen is an architectural monument that originally emerged as part of the Imperial Palace of Charlemagne. By the beginning of the 14th century The imperial castle was in ruins, only the Chapel of Charlemagne and the Granusturm tower have survived. Soon a new building of the city hall was added to the tower. In the 16th century, the tower housed the city archive.
