Rating: 9,0/10 (1725 votes) Sigismondo Castle is one of the most popular tourist sites in Rimini. The construction of the castle was started by order of Sigismund Pandolfo Malatesta in 1437. According to historical documents, Sigismund himself was engaged in the design of the castle, of course, not without the participation of professional architects. The construction of the castle lasted for 15 years. Initially, the castle was surrounded by a moat with a ravelin located at the main entrance. Historians claim that the strong walls of the fortress could withstand the impact of firearms. The towers of the castle were facing the city as the fortress was built outside the city. Most likely, popular uprisings were not uncommon at that time, and Sigismund had to defend himself from the townspeople. Then a bronze cannon was installed in each tower. The central part of the castle, consisting of several buildings, served as a residence for the lord. The rooms were decorated with curtains, frescoes and tapestries. The outer walls of the residence were also decorated with majolica, but only fragments have survived to this day. In 1821, the fortress was used as a barracks for the detachment of the carabinieri. In 1826 the outer walls of the fortress were demolished and the moat was filled up. We also recommend reading Rubicon River in Italy, Rimini resort Topic: Sigismondo Castle in Italy, Rimini resort. |
