Vienna Gasometers are the former four gasolders that were built between 1896 and 1899. They are located in the eleventh district of Vienna, Semmyring. At that time, they were created to provide the city with gas, which was previously supplied by an English company. At that time, gas meters were the largest in Europe.

In 1984, gas meters were abandoned due to a change in technology, that is, the city switched to natural gas, which does not require such large reservoirs. Since that time, gasolders have been used for a variety of purposes.

In 1995, a competition for ideas for converting gas meters was announced. As a result, the rework of four gas meters went to 4 architects: Wilhelm Holzbauer, Jean Nouvel, Manfred Vedorn and Coop Himmelbau. All gas meters were divided into several zones: office, residential and entertainment (shops, cinema, and so on). During the reconstruction, the historical exterior was preserved.

The reconstruction of the gas meters lasted from 1999 to 2001. In the spring of 2001, the converted gas meters began to be populated, and in the fall of the same year, the official opening took place.

Today, there is a whole community inside the gas meters;   we can say that this is a city within a city. Many works and dissertations in journalism, psychology, architecture have been devoted to the phenomenon of gas meters (the community and the buildings themselves).

The housing stock of Viennese gas meters is approximately 800 apartments. Two-thirds of these apartments are located inside the walls of the gas meters, which are home to about 1,600 permanent residents, and there are also 70 student rooms with a capacity of about 250 students. Gasometers have a concert hall for 2000-3000 people, a municipal archive, a cinema and much more.
