Rating: 8,1/10 (2403 votes)  Burgtheater was created in 1741 by order of Maria Theresa, as a court theater, that is, theatrical performances were given for representatives of the aristocracy. During the 18th and 19th centuries, it was the most famous and prestigious theater for the German-speaking audience. On the stage of this theater, premieres of Mozart's operas were given, such as"The Marriage of Figaro","The Abduction from the Seraglio","Everybody Does This." In the fall of 1888 the Burgtheater moved to a new building on the Ringstrasse. At the beginning of the 20th century, the world famous actor J. Kainz performed on the theater stage. The classical repertoire was performed on the main stage of the theater, while modern works were mainly performed on the stage of the branch. In 1945, during the bombing, the theater building was destroyed, after which the theater was housed in the building of the former Ronacher variety show. After the bombing, only gorgeous staircases survived, along which busts of playwrights are now located, based on whose works plays are staged in the theater. Restoration work lasted from 1953 to 1955, during which it was possible to recreate the original appearance of the building, and in addition, the theater was equipped with new modern technologies. In autumn 1955, the theater opened and the premiere of Franz Grillparzer's The Greatness and Fall of King Ottokar took place.
