Folkstheater is translated from German as folk theater. It was created in 1889 at the request of the inhabitants of Vienna as a counterbalance to the Burgtheater. The theater building was designed by architects Hermann Helmer and Ferdinand Fellner. The folk theater is located next to the Museum Quarter.
The main purpose of the Folkstheater is to popularize modern and classical plays among the general population. The theater's repertoire is dominated by classical, contemporary and experimental plays, predominantly by Austrian authors, including Johann Nestroy and Ferdinand Raimund. There is a monument to Ferdinand Raimund in front of the theater building.
The People's Theater is being actively expanded. In 2005, the stage-branch"Folkstheater Hundsturm" was opened in Margareten. This scene is mainly used for experimental theater productions.
