The Vienna State Opera is one of the largest opera houses in Austria, considered the center of the country's musical culture. Until 1918, it was the Vienna Court Opera.
The building that houses the Vienna State Opera today was built in 1869 by the architect August von Sickardsburg, and the interior design is by Eduard van der Nyll. For a long time, the building was considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the world.
The theater was opened with the production of"Don Juan" by Mozart. The chief conductor and musical director of the theater from 1875 to 1897 was H. Richter. Under him, a cycle of Mozart's operas, Othello by Verdi, Ring of the Nibelungen by Wagner were staged. In 1897, the conductor and composer Gustav Mahler became the director of the theater. During the period of Mahler's leadership in the Vienna State Opera the Queen of Spades, Iolanta and Eugene Onegin by P.I. Tchaikovsky, and the theater is recognized as one of the best in Europe.
In 1945, the building of the State Opera was seriously damaged during the bombing of Vienna. For about 10 years the theater performances were held on other stages. Only in 1956, the next theatrical season began in a new restored building, Herbert von Karajan became the artistic director.
