Photo and description

The most famous drama theater in Vienna was built in 1874 by the design of Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hassenauer. The theater building is located on Vienna's boulevard ring - Ringstrasse.

In 1945, a bomb hit the theater and the building was badly damaged: the only thing that survived was two magnificent majestic staircases in the side wings of the building. The walls along these stairs are decorated with busts of playwrights, whose plays are performed in the theater. The ceilings are decorated with frescoes by the brothers Klimt and Franz Match.

The facade of the theater is decorated with a frieze with figures of Bacchus and Ariadne, and a statue of Apollo rises above the frieze. The rich interior of the foyer is decorated with portraits of famous actors and actresses.

During the post-war restoration, it was possible to preserve the original appearance of the auditorium, sustained in gold, red and cream colors. It can accommodate over a thousand spectators.
