Rating: 8,4/10 (3987 votes)  The Royal Palace is located opposite the Gallery of Victor Emmanuel II, on the Duomo Square. The building was erected on the site where the town hall was located, dating from the 12th century. In the 18th century, during the Austrian rule, the palazzo was used for ceremonial receptions, speeches and court sessions. At the same time, reconstruction works were carried out in the palace, during which it acquired a modern look in the style of the late Austrian Baroque. At the end of the 18th century, a large-scale reconstruction of the palace was also carried out. Piermarini was appointed to supervise the work. Upon completion of construction, the palace acquired a neoclassical style. Such famous people as Maria Teresa, Ferdinand I, Napoleon stayed in the palazzo. In the 20s of the last century, the palazzo became the property of the townspeople. During the Second World War, part of the palace was destroyed. Restoration work began immediately after the end of the war, and ended only in the 1960s. Nowadays, various exhibitions are held in the palazzo, and there is also a museum.
