One of the oldest French abbeys, the first mention of which dates back to the 11th century.
Charlemagne founded the abbey after learning what exactly at this place two wandering Macedonian monks, canonized by Catholicism, were martyred.
For several centuries, the interior of the monastery and the main church was decorated with many frescoes by the most famous artists of that time. In the 19th century, a whole program was launched to save these frescoes, since by the decision of the Great Revolution, all monasteries in the country were closed.
At the end of the 20th century, the abbey was included in the list of the World Legacy.
