Palazzo Piccolomini is the most significant Renaissance monument in the city, built in the tradition of Florentine architecture. The palace was built by the Piccolomini family, who were one of the most influential in the city.

The construction of the palace is the initiative of Andrea and Giacomo Piccolomini Todeschini – nephews of Pius II. The construction of the palace was carried out from 1469 to 1495. The work was supervised by Pier Paolo del Porrina.

Two large coats of arms of this noble family adorn the harmonious and elegant facade of the building. The lower floor of the building is faced with rustic stones, and the upper floors - – hewn stones.

Particularly noteworthy is the courtyard of the palace, where you can see the capitals, created by the sculptor Marrin at the beginning of the 16th century.

In 1884 the palace was taken over by the Bank of Italy, and therefore its halls were rebuilt for the needs of the bank. At that time, some of the rooms on the second floor were decorated with neo-Renaissance frescoes. On the roof of the palazzo, a terrace was arranged, from where you can now enjoy a stunning view of the city.

In 1998, after renovations, the palace opened its doors to the public as a Center for Contemporary Art.

Palazzo Piccolomini, along with other attractions in the historic part of Siena, has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
