Schellenberg Castle is located in Rellinghausen, Essen. The exact date of the castle's foundation is still unknown. The castle was first mentioned in documents dating back to the 12th century. At that time, the castle was owned by Messrs. Von Broich. Then the complex of the castle consisted of the main and auxiliary buildings, which were surrounded by a powerful defensive wall. In the 13th century, the castle passed into the possession of the Orst family by exchange. In 1353 the castle was acquired by the knight Noldo Kuckelsheim. Subsequently, the knight's granddaughter presented the castle as a dowry to Pilgrim von Lyten. In 1452, the castle was acquired by Johann von Frittinghoff-Schell, in honor of this family the estate acquired its current name. After 25 years, the sons of Johann – Kord, Johann and Berndt divided the inheritance among themselves. Thus, the Schellenberg castle went to Kord von Fittinghoff-Schell. In the middle of the 17th century, the owner of the castle was Gisbert Johann Fittinghoff-Schell. At that time, the auxiliary building was demolished, which was replaced by a stone residential building. In the 1660s, the castle was rebuilt into a baroque manor – a stone house, a corner defensive tower was rebuilt, and another wing was built in the southwestern part of the castle. At the beginning of the 19th century, a large utility yard was equipped. In the 20s of the same century, a three-storey manor house was built on the southern side of the castle, and the stone house was increased by one floor. At the end of the 19th century, a pseudo-Gothic building was built in the northwestern part of the complex. Rod von Fittingoff-Schell owned the castle until 1909, and then moved to Kalbeck castle, located in Weeze. Later Schellenberg functioned as an orphanage, and in 1920 it was rented by the Catholic Society for the Poor. In 1967, the Higher Police School was located in Schellenberg. The castle premises are currently rented by various companies and firms. We also recommend reading Castle Baldeney in Germany, Essen resort Topic: Schellenberg Castle in Germany, Essen resort. |
