The Karlsruhe Zoo is one of the oldest and largest zoos in Europe. The foundation of the zoo dates back to 1865. There is an aviary with flamingos near the main entrance. Of particular value in the zoo is the polar bear complex, which is a replica of the tundra and Arctic habitat, divided into three sections in order to separate female polar bears from their males. The zoo also houses the City Garden, which includes the Japanese Garden and the Rose Garden. The garden was laid in 1918. In 1967 a federal garden exhibition was held here. Especially popular in the garden is the ship train – gondolas connected by an underwater rope and plying the garden pond. Every two years, the city garden hosts a colorful Festival of Lights.
