The gallery is located on the south coast of the Grand Canal and gives its name to one of the bridges across this canal. Academy Gallery was founded by the Venetian Senate in 1750 as a school of sculpture, painting and architecture. The purpose of creating this educational institution was to turn Venice into one of the centers of art education in the republic, along with Florence, Rome, Bologna and Milan. The original name of the Gallery – Academy of Fine Arts of Venice - in 1807 it was changed to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In the 19th century, the gallery was transformed into a museum, which gradually began to increase its funds. Today, the museum displays the works of such famous painters as Giorgione, Giovanni Batista Tiepolo, Vittore Carpacho, Pietro Longa, Bernardo Bellotto, Canaletto, Francesco Guardi and others.
