The Academy of Fine Arts was founded in 1563. The gallery's exposition was formed by 1784 under the leadership of the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo. After 100 years, a new room, the so-called Tribune, was added to the main building of the Academy to house the original statue of `` David '' Michelangelo. The Gallery also contains other masterpieces by Michelangelo, such as Slaves. This is a sculptural group created in 1521-1523 to decorate the tombstone of Pope Julius II.

In the Accademia Gallery you can see a magnificent collection of paintings by famous Florentine painters, including Botticelli, Filippo Lippi, Bronzino and Ghirlandaio. One of the halls displays paintings and misery of members of the Academy of the 19th century, including works by the sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini.
