The Academy of Fine Arts is an Austrian state art academy, one of the oldest in Europe.

It was founded in 1692. For the first time it arose as a private academy of the court painter P. Strudel. In 1772, all art institutions that existed in Vienna at that time were united into the Academy of the United Fine Arts.

In 1872 the Academy was given the status of a higher educational institution, and in 1998 the Academy became University.

Since April 1877, the Academy of Fine Arts has been housed in a building built by Theophilus von Hansen, which is located on Schillerplatz.

In addition to premises for training, the academy includes an art gallery and an engraving study. The art gallery displays art collections dating back to the 14th century:
· Masterpieces of famous Flemish, German and Dutch painters (Cranach, Bosch, Rubens, Rembrandt).
· Works of Italian and Austrian Baroque masters (Maulberch, Gran, Schmidt, Guardi, Kremser, Tiepolo).
· Art Nouveau (Wotrub, Beckl, Hundertwasser ) and Biedermeier (Waldmuller).

The engraving room contains the largest collection of medieval drawings and about 30 thousand printed graphics and drawings by Paul Troger and Albrecht Durer, landscape sketches by Friedrich Hauermann, watercolors by Moritz Duffinger.

All collections of paintings and drawings are educational material for the students of the Academy.
