This church was erected in the 7th century on the site of an early Christian basilica, which was three times longer than it. During the Byzantine period, the basilica was surrounded by numerous religious and administrative buildings.

In 1585 it was converted into a mosque, but in 1912 it was consecrated as a church again.

According to archaeological and historical data, In the southern part of the colonnade and in the nave, the metropolitans of Thessaloniki, such as Constantine Mesopotamitis, Grigorios Kutalis and others, were once buried.

The church is decorated with numerous frescoes and mosaics of the 9-10th centuries. And the dome of the church is decorated with the fresco"Ascension".
