This circular structure, crowned with a dome, was built as the mausoleum of the ruler of Galerius in the 3rd century AD. However, the emperor was buried in a completely different place, and the Rotunda became a Christian temple. Thus, it is one of the oldest Christian churches in the whole world. In the 16th century, the Rotunda was turned into a mosque, and in the same century a minaret was added to it.
