The volcano was formed around the XVIII – XIX centuries, as a result of geological layering of rocks. There was a lot of controversy at that time. Some naturalists believed that Komorni Gurku is nothing more than a sediment, others argued that it is a volcano. In 1831-1837, Count Kashpara dug a horizontal shaft in the hill, in connection with which the presence of a basalt volcano vent was discovered in the depths of the hill. Since then, the geological dispute has been finally resolved. Soon Komorni Gurka became one of the most thoroughly researched volcanoes in Europe. The pit located on the hillside is not at all a crater, as most tourists believe, and the funnel-shaped depression at the top is just the remains of a mine. On the southern slope of the hill, you can see it stretching from the top to the foot of the basalt vein, which filled the crack that had appeared here earlier. Near the hill at the edge of the forest is a portal with a relief image of I.V. Goethe and an inscription dedicated to defenders and friends of nature.
