According to historical documents, in 1124 the castle was owned by the Erberia family. In 1317 the castle was captured by the Marquis Spinette Malaspin, and after a while the castle was again besieged and captured by Castruccio Castracani. In 1334, the castle was returned to the Marquis of Malaspina, who still own it. According to legend, Christina Adelaide Pallavicino – the bride of Ippolito Malaspina, gathered in one of the rooms of the castle the men in love with her, after which she pushed them one by one into the ditch with sharp knives.
