Photo and descriptionThe ancient Odeon theater, located in one of the historical parks in the north-east of Paphos, is located very close to the famous villa of Dionysus and Asklepion. Also, near the amphitheater, excavations are underway on the site of the ancient market square - agora, and on the other side there is a modern lighthouse. The theater was built in the Hellenic era, and in the II-III centuries A.D. was completed by the Romans, and, despite its considerable age, is still quite well preserved. Although, like many other ancient buildings, it was seriously damaged as a result of a large-scale earthquake that occurred in the 4th century. The entire amphitheater was almost completely carved into monolithic rock, only the lower part was made of separate stone slabs. In the center is a stage about 11 meters in diameter. The Odeon was discovered only in 1973, after which it was immediately decided to restore it. Initially it was a huge structure - it had 25 rows of seats, but now there are only 12 left. In total, the amphitheater can accommodate about 1200 spectators. Previously, their number reached several thousand. In addition, the theater was completely covered before the earthquake.
