Photo and description

The architect of the Charax Palace is Nikolai Petrovich Krasnov. This talented architect can be safely placed alongside the best architects of the time. Many experts in the field of architecture and admirers of Krasnov's talent consider this particular palace to be the best work of the architect.

Grand Duke Georgy Mikhailovich invited the architect Krasnov to the post of chief architect for the construction of palace premises. The palace was built near Ai-Todor, on the prince's private territory. Once upon a time, the ancient Roman fortress Kharax was located on Cape Ai-Todor, in honor of which the palace got its name.

Initially, the main buildings were planned: a palace with 46 rooms, a church, a chapel, a large stable, a greenhouse, a kitchen, a suite house, a park, garden and gardener's house, as well as sewerage and plumbing. After some time, the architect decided to build a garage with a fuel storage and a private house for drivers.

Each facade of the palace was designed differently. The facades of the building differed from each other in architecture and decor. The architect wanted to make all sides of the palace special, and he succeeded. It is impossible to see all the beauty and originality of the castle from one side, for this you need to go around the palace from all sides.

Most of all attention is drawn to the wide staircase of the palace, beautifully laid out of stones. From the palace platform, this staircase leads down to the sea for a walk along the embankment. At the top of the stairs is the statue "Glory to God in the Highest."

Of the small buildings of the Charax Palace, an "antique" gazebo can be distinguished. It has survived to this day in excellent condition. During the construction of the gazebo, the architect used 12 columns and an entablature from the atrium of the palace in Oreanda, intended for the wife of Nicholas I. But the palace in Oreanda was destroyed by a strong fire in 1881. In one letter, Nicholas II informed his mother that he had presented the columns and the entablature to Prince Georgy Mikhailovich to decorate the park on the territory of his palace.
