The Satire Theater, or the Moscow Academic Satire Theater, is located in the center of Moscow, on Triumfalnaya Square. The theater was founded in October 1924. The artistic director was A.G. Alekseev. From 1926 to 1929 the theater was headed by director D. Gutman. In the late forties, the theater was headed by Nikolai Gorchakov. From 1948 to 1953 N. Petrov was the artistic director.

Initially, it did not stage plays. The theater's repertoire included pamphlets, humorous reviews, and vaudeville. In the thirties, the repertoire was enriched with everyday comedies: "A Simple Girl", "Alien Child" by Shkvarkin, "Talents", "Big Family" by Fedin, "Monsieur de Pourceaugnac" by Moliere, "City of Fools" by Saltykov-Shchedrin.

The artistic director of the theater from 1957 to 2000 was V. Pluchek and the theater became very popular. From 1965 to 1973, along with Valentin Pluchek, he worked as a production director Mark Zakharov. He staged performances: "A profitable place", "Terkin in the next world." These performances have become a notable event in public life. They determined the further development of the theater, its journalistic orientation. The theater's extensive repertoire included performances "from tragedy to farce", philosophical, satirical, tragic performances appeared.

V. Leventhal was the author of the design of the performances in the sixties. The performances had a high level of stage culture.

Actors of the theater surprisingly combined vital authenticity with sharp theatrical techniques. There are many famous names in the theater troupe. In different years V. Lepko, T. Peltzer, A. Papanov, E. Vesnik, V. Vasilieva, A. Mironov, G. Menglet, M. Derzhavin, O. Aroseva, A, Shirvindt, N. Selezneva, S. Mishulin, Z. Zelinskaya and many others.

In 1984 the theater received the title of "Academic". In 2000, the Moscow Satire Theater was headed by Alexander Anatolyevich Shirvindt.

The theater's repertoire is diverse. It is staged by a variety of directors: Alexander Shirvindt, Andrey Zhitinkin, Sergey Artsibashev, Margarita Mikaelyan. The current repertoire includes the following performances: “The Kid and Carlson Who Lives on the Roof” (after A. Lindgren), “Women Without Borders” (Y. Polyakov), “Homo Erectus” (Y. Polyakov), “Too Married Taxi Driver” (R Cooney), "Honoring" (B. Slade) and many others.
