Moscow Academic Theater named after Vl. Mayakovsky is one of the oldest theaters in Moscow with a renowned team of actors. The theater is located on the street. B. Nikitskaya, in a building that was built in 1886 for famous foreign guest performers. World famous artists played on the stage of the theater: Eleanor Duse, Coquelin Sr., Coquelin Jr., Ernesto Possart, Sarah Bernhardt and many other European actors. The theater was called "International".

From 1920 to 1922, the building housed the Terevsat Theater of Revolutionary Satire. From 1922 to 1943 - Theater of the Revolution. Vsevolod Meyerhold was appointed its head. Since that time, the history of the modern theater named after I. Vl. Mayakovsky. Meyerhold directed the theater for two years. Then the theater was headed by the figure of Soviet culture - A. D. Popov. From 1941 to 1943, the theater was evacuated to Tashkent. In 1943 the theater returned to Moscow. Actors from the Moscow Lensovet Theater and the Moscow Drama Theater joined his troupe. The theater was headed by N. Okhlopkov. From 1943 to 1954, the theater was called the Moscow Drama Theater. The theater received the name of Vladimir Mayakovsky in 1954.

In 1968 A. Goncharov became the head of the theater. He directed the theater until 2001, for over thirty years. During this period, the most significant performances were staged: "Talents and Admirers", "Defeat", "Conversations with Socrates", "A Streetcar Named Desire", "Defeat", "The Seagull", "Run", "The Life of Klim Samgin", "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District ”,“ Fruits of Enlightenment ”,“ A Doll's House ”,“ Napoleon the First ”.

In 2002, a new director came to the theater - S. Artsibashev. His first production was the play "The Marriage" based on Gogol. The performance was a resounding success. The next production by Artsibashev was the play "The Brothers Karamazov" by F. Dostoevsky. In 2005, the premiere of the play "Dead Souls" by N.V. Gogol. Artsibashev was the director of the play and the leading actor in it - Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov.

Theater Vl. Mayakovsky has always been famous for his actors. M. Babanova, M. Straukh, B. Tenin, A. Dzhigarkhanyan, T. Doronina, O. Yakovleva, S. Nemolyaeva, N. Gundareva, I. Kostolevsky, E. Simonova and many others worked there.
