The Vorarlberg State Museum is located in the port area of the large Austrian city of Bregenz. It is dedicated to the history, customs and culture of the federal state of Vorarlberg.

The museum itself was founded back in 1857, but over 150 years it was modernized many times, and its collection was constantly growing. Therefore, he moved several times to new, larger buildings.

Previously, the museum was located in a building from 1905, designed by the famous architect Georg Baumeister. However, in the sixties of the XX century, it was decided to build on an extra floor in this old building, and therefore its brightly decorated facade was completely destroyed. In any case, the museum has now moved to a new, modern building with an unusual shape, completed in 2013.

Now the museum has 4 large departments: history, archeology, ethnography and fine arts. The last section displays the works of many outstanding Austrian and German artists, including the famous Angelika Kaufmann, whose childhood was spent in Austria. It is also worth noting objects of medieval religious art made in the Gothic style and Baroque paintings.

In total, the museum has more than 160 thousand exhibits, including ancient Roman archaeological finds, ceramics and porcelain, national costumes and elegant fans. A separate exposition is devoted to urban crafts and the development of a more modernized industry - here are presented old devices and instruments, and the first improved mechanisms. Another gallery is dedicated to contemporary art: sculptures, photographs and other various installations.
