The current building of the Museum of Lower Austria in St. Polten was built in 2002 according to the plans of the architect Hans Hollein and the architectural company "Rata Plan". The collection of the museum, founded at the beginning of the 20th century, tells about the history, art and nature of the federal state of Lower Austria. The tasks of the provincial state museum of local lore are preservation, study, presentation of existing artifacts and management of museum funds.

The collection includes works by Ferdinand Georg Waldmuller, Friedrich Gauermann, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, Leopold Hauer, Adolf Frohner, Arnulf Rainer, Elke Christufek, Heinz Zibulka and Hermann Nitsch.

The National Museum of Lower Austria has extensive collections , archaeological, natural history artifacts. In addition, the museum has a mini-zoo, where fish, amphibians, reptiles and insects are kept in aquariums and terrariums, that is, all the inhabitants of the Danube water area.
