Photo and description

The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church was built in 1891 in memory of Emperor Wilhelm I, the founder of the empire. It was badly damaged during an air raid in 1943. Its bell tower has not been restored, as a reminder of those terrible years.

This church has become a symbol of West Berlin. Its ruins are included in the modern architectural ensemble, which consists of a new church in the form of an octagon and a tower made of blocks of blue glass brought from Chartres. The tower has recently been restored with mosaics depicting all the German Kaisers.

Above the stylized altar inside the building, the figure of Christ floating in the air is fortified. Organ concerts are often held on Sundays.
