Photo and description

Ulcinj is located on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, its geographical position obliged the city to build a reliable fortification structure. The fortress in a part of the Old Town rises 60 meters above sea level, its history is about 2500 years old. The fortress has experienced and preserved traces of various ancient civilizations that were once related to these territories - Greeks, Romans, Turks, Serbs.

A wide road stretches along the fortress walls, which narrows as it approaches the highest point. Today, on the territory of the fortress, residential buildings dating back to the 16th century, where people still live, remain intact.

The peculiarity of the fortress is in its architectural structure: modern-looking staircases suggest many exits, leading to the sea from different sides. Today, there is a restaurant for tourists on the territory of the fortress.

It is known that in the years from 1672 to 1676, Shabtai Tsvi, a famous Kabbalist and false messiah, was a prisoner of the fortress. There is also a legend that before the Ulcinj fortress belonged to pirates who captured Miguel de Cervantes, the creator of Don Quixote. The writer spent 5 years in captivity, and one of the local girls inspired Cervantes to create the legendary image of Dulcinea, which, in turn, inspired the exploits of the literary hero of the novel, Don Quixote.
