Photo and description

Among the six mosques in Ulcinj, the Ali Pasha Mosque should be especially noted. This building was built under the walls of the Old Town in 1719, just a few months after the Venetian fleet attacked Ulcinj. The Venetian armada was defeated in a violent storm in the Adriatic Sea opposite Ulcinj. The undiscovered and resourceful citizens of the city, at that time under the rule of the Ottomans, fished out of the waves all that was left of the once mighty fleet of the Most Serene Venice, and with the proceeds from the sale of the mining funds, as well as with private donations, they built a mosque, which was named after the legendary Turkish admiral, hero of Ulcinj, Ali Pasha Kilich. An inscription is carved on the wall of the mosque, from which it follows that this structure has become a symbol of happiness and progress for the local residents.

The only hamam in Montenegro is adjacent to the Ali Pasha Mosque. It was built and opened to the public even before the mosque was finished. The hamam is still in operation and is one of the attractions of the city of Ulcinj.

On Friday, sermons (khutba) in the Ali Pasha Mosque are held in Arabic and Albanian. As you know, Ulcinj is the southernmost city of Montenegro, which is located near the border with Albania. Most of the inhabitants of Ulcinj are Albanians by nationality, who also profess Islam. Therefore, on Friday, quite a lot of believers gather near the Ali Pasha Mosque.

About 100 meters from the Ali Pasha Mosque there is another mosque called Matrosskaya.
