Photo and description

Mount Bazarduzu is the highest mountain peak in the Republic of Azerbaijan. Its height is 4466 m. The mountain is located on the border of Dagestan and Azerbaijan.

The mountain is composed of porphyrites and shales. In the first half of the twentieth century. eight small glaciers descended from the mountain top. The largest glacier, about 1 km long, is called Tihitsar.

The Bazarduzu peak is considered a kind of border marker, since its northern slope is located and belongs to one state, and the southern one is completely different. In Azerbaijan, that is, to the south and east, the summit is cut off by rather steep talus and black slate walls, and to the north and west, more precisely in the direction of Dagestan, by ice walls.

The name of the mountain Bazarduzu is translated from the Azerbaijani and Turkic languages as “market square”. This is due to the fact that in ancient times and the Middle Ages, to the east of Bazarduzu, in the Shahnabad valley, large multinational fairs were held annually. Many buyers and traders gathered here, both representatives of the peoples of the Eastern Caucasus, and close neighbors: Persians, Georgians, Armenians, Kumyks, Arabs, Tsakhurs, Jews, Indians and so on.

Dominating other mountain peaks, Bazarduzu could be seen several tens of kilometers away. Having seen the ice peak of the mountain, the caravan men already knew that they were on the right path. The first documented ascent to the highest mountain peak of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mount Bazarduzu, took place in the winter season in 1847. The ascent was made by Russian topographers headed by K. Aleksandrov. The main goal of their ascent was the installation of a triangulation tower.

Mount Bazarduzu is a great place for mountaineering, thanks to which it attracts many tourists. At the foot of the mountain there are numerous sports alpine camps, where training in rock climbing and mountaineering takes place.
