Photo and description

Mount Aneto is part of the Pyrenees mountain range and is located in the province of Huesca. The mountain peak Aneto, with a height of 3404 meters, is the highest peak in the Pyrenees and the third highest mountain in the whole of Spain. The mountain is located in the north-east of Spain, almost on the border with France. The summit, at the foot of which lies the picturesque Benasque Valley, is part of the Maladeta mountain range, which belongs to the territory of the natural park. The mountain consists of rocky rocks, mainly of the Paleozoic and Mesozoic periods.

The largest glacier in Spain is located on the northern slope of the mountain, with an area of 79.6 hectares. Unfortunately, due to global warming, the size of the glacier is gradually decreasing. So, it is known that in the 19th century its area was more than 200 hectares, while by 1981 it had already decreased to 106.7 hectares.

Aneto Peak is very popular with climbers. The ascent to the top is considered relatively easy, and the ascent takes an average of 12 hours. It is noteworthy that the first ascent of Aneto Peak was made by Russian officer Platon Chikhachev in July 1842. In 1848, the first winter ascent of the mountain was made, which was made by Roger de Mont, B. Couriege, B. and V. Paget. The path to the summit begins at the Renclus Refuge and runs along the longest part of the glacier. From the top, an unforgettable, striking contrast view opens up: the snowy peaks of the Maladeta massif on the north side and the greenery of the Alto valleys in the south.
