The Azerbaijan State Art Museum was founded in 1936. In 1943, the museum was named after the famous theater artist R. Mustafayev, who was one of the founders of Azerbaijan theatrical and decorative art. Until the 1950s. housed in several historic mansions. In 1951, by order of the secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan M. Bagirov, a beautiful building of the XIX century was transferred to the museum. - Debourg mansion, built by the engineer von der None.

There are more than 17 thousand exhibits in the Azerbaijan State Art Museum, making it the largest art museum in the country. The museum exposition presents various works of Azerbaijani, Russian and Western European artists, as well as samples of decorative art. In addition, the museum collection includes archaeological monuments, ceramic, copper, jewelry, carpets and national clothes.

Many works of the founders of Azerbaijan's realistic art, M.K. Erivani, M.M. Navvab, A. Azimzade and B. Kengerli, the best works of the country's contemporary artists M. Abdullaev, S. Bahlulzade, T. Salakhov, T. Narimanbekov and so on.

The Department of Western European Art contains paintings by A. Ostade, Guercino, J. Sustermans, G. Duguet and M. Mirevelt, as well as sculpture, decorative and applied art and graphics from France, Germany and Italy.

In the section dedicated to Russian art, visitors can see the works of I. Aivazovsky, K. Bryullov, V. Borovikovsky, N. Argunov, I. Levitan, V. Makovsky, V. Tropinin, I. Grabar, K. Korovin, N. Roerich and others. The works of Russian artists dedicated to Azerbaijan deserve special attention. This includes the work "View of Baku from the Sea" by V. Vereshchagin.
