Photo and description

Monument to M.Yu. Lermontov on the shore of Gelendzhik Bay is one of the city's attractions. The monument to the famous Russian poet appeared in this city and on this square is not by chance. According to the surviving memories of local residents, it was here that Lermontov most of all liked to rest during his stay in Gelendzhik.

Some historians claim that the Russian poet was in the Gelendzhik region in 1837 from May 19 to September 24. However, many of the poet's biographers doubt this fact. Disputes about whether M. Yu. Lermontov visited Gelendzhik or not are still going on. However, this does not in any way affect the opinion of local residents, who with great pleasure tell stories about the stay of the great poet in their hometown.

Sculpture of M. Yu. Lermontov was made almost natural growth. It depicts a thoughtful, looking into the distance poet, dressed in an officer's uniform of the Russian army of the 19th century. Lermontov stands with his arms crossed over his chest, in his left hand he holds a uniform officer's cap. The author of this monument is the Soviet sculptor Leonid Mikhailovich Toriche.

Monument to M.Yu. Lermontov in Gelendzhik was not always like this. The first version of the monument to the poet was erected on the city embankment in 1956. It was made of concrete, installed on a metal frame and painted in steel gray. The second version of the monument - made of an alloy of bronze and copper - was cast in 1991 in the creative workshop of Yu.G. Dzhibrayev. However, the events unfolding at that time did not allow the establishment of a new monument in Gelendzhik, therefore, it stood for 7 years in St. Petersburg in the sculptor's workshop and only in 1998 was it brought to the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus and installed on the city embankment of Gelendzhik.

Currently, Lermontov Square, together with the monument to M. Yu. Lermontov and Lermontov Boulevard, are & nbsp; the most beautiful places in the city of Gelendzhik.
