100 km from Penza there is a picturesque place - the Tarkhany Museum-Reserve, where the genius Russian poet Mikhail Yurievich Lermontov grew up. A unique historical and cultural monument of its kind was unveiled in the village of Lermontovo (formerly the village of Tarkhany) in 1939, on the estate of E.A. Arsenyeva (the poet's grandmother). Since 1969 the museum has been transformed into the State Lermontov Museum-Reserve and included in the list of especially valuable objects of cultural heritage.

The Museum-Reserve, with an area of about 198 hectares, consists of many attractions associated with the childhood of M.Yu. Lermontov. The face of the estate is the manor house, where the poet was born and where his personal belongings, family heirlooms are kept in our time, making up the golden fund of the museum. The sights also include: the Church of Mary of Egypt, the monument to M.Yu. Lermontov, a human hut, a place for the poet's children's games, "Green Theater", an oak planted by M.Yu. Lermontov, a windmill, a distant garden with a rotunda and three beautiful ponds. In the far corner of the estate there is the poet's grave, the Church of the Archangel Michael, a nature reserve with an oak grove.

Today the State Lermontov Museum-Reserve is a repository of rare and original items of landlord life of the 18-19 centuries, a wonderful example of manor park art, a place dear to the heart for admirers of this Russian poet.

The museum constantly hosts theatrical excursions, folklore festivals, All-Russian Lermontov events with balls, horse rides and poetry evenings in the spirit of that time, as well as master classes of folk crafts, where the process of making products by local craftsmen is demonstrated.
