Jomas street in Jurmala is located in Majori. Translated from the Latvian language means, perhaps, "sand waves". If you have ever been to Jurmala beach, then, looking at the coastal sand remaining after the sea recedes, you will see that it lies in lines resembling waves.

Jomas Street is the main street of Jurmala and one of the oldest streets of the Riga seaside. Majori railway station is located on one side of the street, and the Jurmala globe closes it.

Jomas Street was founded at the end of the 19th century. Over the years of its existence, it has endured all kinds of transformations and changes. In the 60-70s of the XIX century, the division of land areas began for the first time. And at the same time, the main streets in Majori began to emerge. Around 1850, there was an impenetrable damp forest near the existing streets of Jomas, Juras and Lienes. Local peasants grazed cattle near it.

Jomas Street originated in the distant past behind the square of Majori station. It was at the current intersection of Lienes and Jomas. After 1936, when the names of streets were changed and Rigas Street was shortened, Jomas Street was extended to Dubulti (bordered by Majori district). Until now, the street name has not changed. Only in 1899 for some time it turned into Pushkin Street.

Only at the end of the 19th century Jomas Street in Majori becomes the busiest and noisiest street in Jurmala. It was in this place that a pharmacy, a market and the first store were opened. In 1870, at the corner of Jomas and Omnibus Streets, Horn created the first hotel in Majori and laid out a garden. It was the most important cultural center of the Riga seaside.

The appearance of Jomas Street, especially its original appearance, has changed significantly after frequent fires and 2 world wars, as a result of which some of the oldest wooden buildings were destroyed. Time passed. The houses changed both their functional purpose and their owners. There is no transport here. The street is for pedestrians only. Only for the duration of motorcycle festivals, the street is fenced off for holiday motorcycles.

Jomas Street is a magical sea air, neat wooden houses, an incredible number of summer cafes, hospitable and comfortable hotels, souvenir shops, ice cream and cotton candy, cozy restaurants. In summer, it is full of people, because the sea is only 200 - 300 meters away.

The famous Dzintari Concert Hall is located near Jomas Street. It annually hosts a competition for young performers "New Wave", a humor festival "Jurmalina", a KVN festival "Voting KiViN". And also not far from Jomas street there is a monument to Rainis and Aspazija and an interesting museum of old cars.

The people's house of Jurmala is a historical building located on Jomas-35. It used to be the Jurmala cinema. The hotel and Horn's concert hall were built on this site in 1870. Symphony orchestras from Prague, Berlin and Warsaw have performed here. And in 1896 the first cinema in Jurmala was created in the hotel.

Every year in Jurmala there is a festival of Jomas street. Various concerts, performances, competitions (sand sculptures competition and others) are organized here.
