The opening ceremony of the museum took place on November 18, 1887. The project was carried out by Professor Carl Gustav Estlander, who saw the "house of arts" as a creative unity of arts and crafts under one roof - an idea that was received by Finnish artists with little enthusiasm. It now houses the most significant collection of Finnish art from the mid-1700s. before modernism in the 1950s.
