Photo and descriptionMuseum of the History of Katowice - a museum dedicated to the history of the development of the city of Katowice, which displays a collection of photographs, documents and paintings by famous artists. The museum has a total of about 100,000 exhibits, including a series of 27 pastels by Stanislav Ignacy Witkiewicz. The idea of creating a museum was born in the early 70s of the 20th century and was of a social nature. Most of the exhibits were donated by residents of the city. The opening of the Museum of the History of Katowice took place on 21 August 1976. The museum is housed in a four-story Art Nouveau building, built in 1908 by the entrepreneur William Bigger. The building was designed for wealthy citizens, where on one floor there are two comfortable apartments with an area of 150 square meters and 300 square meters with central heating, rare for that time. The exhibition occupies three floors. The exhibition provides an insight into the history of Katowice from 1299 to the present day. In addition to valuable photographs and historical documents, you can see everyday household items, traditional clothes of townspeople from different times, architectural drawings, and interior items. The exposition tells about the life of the middle class and the rich bourgeoisie. Here are fully furnished rooms: kitchen, living room, bedroom, children's room and hallway. The museum is especially proud of its collection of exquisite china. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum also hosts temporary exhibitions.
