Photo and description

The Grand Theater was built in Blackpool in 1894 by architect Frank Matcham. This is his first project where tiers are supported by consoles. This reduced the number of columns and improved the view of the scene. The theater opened with the play "Hamlet". In the future, the theater's repertoire included mainly musicals and musical comedies. Many performances were staged here first, and only then came to London.

The theater was extremely popular until the 30s of the XX century, when cinema began to compete with the theater, and film shows were also organized in the theater. However, the theater could not stand the competition from television, and in the 70s there was talk and the demolition of the building. However, both the building and the theater were preserved, in 1981 it opened after restoration, and in 2006 it was renamed the National Variety Theater.
