Emerald Grotto (Grotta dello Smeraldo) description and photos - Italy: Amalfi Riviera. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The title in English is Grotta dello Smeraldo. Photo and descriptionThe Emerald Grotto is a sea cave located in the vicinity of the resort town of Conca dei Marini on the Amalfi Riviera. It is one of the few sea caves in the world, filled with water and illuminated by the wonderful emerald light from which it got its name. The area of the water surface of the grotto is approximately 45x32 meters, and the ceiling of the cave is 24 meters above the water. Unlike the more famous Blue Grotto, located a few miles to the west on the island of Capri, the Emerald Grotto does not have natural passages above the water level. The only entrance to the cave is underwater. Reflected sunlight penetrates in and gives the water its characteristic emerald hue, which shines in the daytime. By the way, the lack of entrances to the cave was the reason that she remained unknown for a long time. Only in 1932 was it discovered by a local fisherman Luigi Buoncore. You can get to the Emerald Grotto along the main road of the Amalfi Riviera - Strada Statale. There is an elevator next to a small car park that takes visitors down into the cave. There they sit on boats and go on a short trip to the unique wonder of nature.
