Nea Makri is a small Greek town in the north-eastern part of Attica, 32 km from Athens. It is located in the area of the Marathon Valley, where in 490 BC. during the Greco-Persian wars, the famous Marathon battle took place. Nearby are the city of Marathon and the port of Rafina (one of the largest ports in Attica). The Penteli Mountains, famous for their marble, rise to the west. From the coast, washed by the waters of the Gulf of Euboea, there is a stunning view of one of the largest Greek islands - Euboea.

This area was once called Piesti, but after the Asia Minor catastrophe (Greek military campaign in Asia Minor) in 1922 and the subsequent repatriation of the Greeks from the city of Makri, it was renamed Nea Makri (New Makri). In 2011, the local administration was transformed and became an administrative unit of the Marathon municipality.

Outside the city rises Mount Amomon. At its foot is the Monastery of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos, better known among Orthodox Greeks as the Monastery of St. Ephraim, one of the most revered saints in Hellas. In this monastery the relics of Saint Ephraim rest. Also on the territory of the monastery are the holy spring and the tree on which, according to legend, the monk Ephraim was martyred.

The town of Neo Makri is buried in greenery. Luxurious sandy beaches and crystal clear waters are an integral part of these places. Cozy hotels are located along the coastline, and an abundance of restaurants, bars and discos will not let active tourists get bored. There is also a picturesque small port for fishing boats. For nature lovers, there is an organized camping.

The close proximity to Athens will allow travelers to explore the sights of the capital, and visiting the port of Rafina, you can enjoy a yacht trip.
