Photo and description

The largest theater in Upper Austria, the Linz Theater was founded in 1802. In those days, the city authorities, adding variety to the cultural life of their own city, ordered to attach a small theater building to the already existing and popular dance salon. It was built in less than a year in the Empire style. Already on October 3, 1803, the entire flower of the local society gathered here for the first performance. Today, the Linz Theater has stages in four different buildings.

The first building, the Big House, has 693 seats. This is the same theater near the dance hall, built at the beginning of the 19th century. Its ceiling is adorned with a sumptuous Orpheus fresco by the artist Fritz Frohlich. Previously, it hosted performances of different genres, but now only dramas are staged here.

The Linz Theater also has the Musical Theater, where you can see operas, operettas, ballets. This building was built for 4 years by the design of the London architect Terry Pawson. It was opened on April 11, 2013.

The third stage of the theater is located in Kammerspiel, built in 1957 in accordance with the plans of Clemens Holmeister. This building is united by a common glass foyer with the Big House. The Kammerspiel auditorium is small: it can seat only 396 spectators. They mainly stage dramas. Sometimes you can get to the performances of an amateur theater.

The fourth stage is located in the so-called "basement" theater Ursulinenhof, which at the end of the XX century became known as U'hof. It houses a children's center.
