Ujung Kulon National Park description and photos - Indonesia: Java Island. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The name in English is Ujung Kulon National Park.

Photo and description

Ujung Kulon National Park is located in the westernmost point of Java, in the province of Banten. The park includes Krakatai, an active volcano in Indonesia, which is located between the islands of Java and Sumatra, the island of Panaitan, which has gained particular popularity among surfers, and other small islands in the Sunda Strait region, such as Pukang and Handeleum.

It is worth noting that the height of the Krakatoa volcano today is 813 meters, but earlier it was much higher and was a whole island. In 1883, a catastrophic volcanic eruption took place, which destroyed most of the island, and the volcano itself became smaller in size.

On the island of Panaitan there are legendary surf spots, but novice surfers are not recommended to travel to this island because of the waves that turn into giant “pipes” - 600-800 meters, which only professional experienced surfers can handle.

The territory of the national park is 1206 sq. km, of which 443 sq. km. occupies the sea. In 1991, Ujung Kulon Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the largest part of the low-lying tropical forests of Java Island.

The park is inhabited by Javanese rhinos - extremely rare animals, the number of which has critically decreased in recent years. In addition, about 57 rare plant species grow in Ujung Kulon, about 35 species of mammals live, including banteng (a kind of bull), silver gibbon, brilliant ghulman (a species of primates and endemic to the island of Java), Javanese small kanchil (small deer, the smallest artiodactyl on the planet), Javanese leopard, crab-eating macaque. Among the inhabitants of the park there are rare reptiles and amphibians, birds.
