Photo and description

The City Museum of Siena is located on the ground floor of the old Palazzo Pubblico in the city's main square, Piazza del Campo. Here you can see the real masterpieces of the masters of the Sienese school of the 14-16th centuries - sculptures, coins, weapons, jewelry, clay and ceramics.

Zala del Mappamondo - The World Map Room, in which the Council of Siena once sat Republic, got its name from the incredible size of the wooden disc made by Ambrogio Lorenzetti and depicting the territory of the republic. The grandiose "Maest à" Simone Martini, executed in the years 1315-1321, is one of the greatest masterpieces of European Gothic art, clearly demonstrating the majesty and cultural enlightenment of Siena in the 14th century. For the first time, the Virgin Mary is depicted not in the traditional cold and cult forms of Byzantine art, but, on the contrary, as if a figure covered with a haze and warm muted colors make the Mother of God look like a living woman. The celestials surrounding her are also depicted in a new form: each froze in a pose inherent only to him, as opposed to the vague unity of motionless figures that they painted earlier. On the opposite wall hangs another masterpiece by Simone Martini - the famous "Guidoriccio da Fogliano", a symbol of virtue and popular power of the old Republic of Siena.

Next to the Zala del Mappamondo is the Room of Nine, also known as the Zala della Pace. The legendary Council of Nine, which ruled Siena from 1292 to 1355, sat in this room - in fact, the members of the Council could not leave Palazzo Pubblico at all. excluding holidays. The walls of this room are decorated with frescoes by Ambrogio Lorenzetti.
