Photo and description

The Palais de Chaillot is relatively young - it was erected in 1937 for the next Paris World Exhibition. Built on the site of the former Trocadero Palace, which also hosted the World's Fair, but in 1878. And if the Trocadero with its Moorish-Byzantine style symbolized the 19th century, then the neoclassical, constructivist style of Chaillot already reflected the harsh trends of the 20th century.

The palace got its name from the hill on the banks of the Seine on which it stands. This is a very advantageous location: an incredible view of the Eiffel Tower opens up from the square in front of the Chaillot. An equally beautiful view of the palace itself opens from the height of the tower's observation deck. From here you can appreciate the colossal scale of Chaillot, the purity and majesty of his lines.

At first, Chaillot did not plan this at all: simply intended to give the Trocadero a more modern look. But the architects Carlu, Boileau and Azema proposed to demolish the main hall and the towers of the former palace in order to reveal the perspective leading to the Eiffel Tower. The space that appeared was turned into a square with alleys and fountains - its giant arcs embrace two symmetrical wings of the palace. The Chaillot National Theater is located right in the hill (a century later Vladimir Vysotsky will give a concert there).

The building is richly decorated with sculptures in the classical style. In the evenings it is very beautifully illuminated.

There are several museums in the Chaillot Palace. Museum of French Monumental Art, where you can get an overview of the architecture of France from the XII century to the present day. The National Maritime Museum displays a variety of ship models, navigational instruments, authentic items of marine life, starting from the 17th century. The Museum of Man tells about the origin of mankind, rare archaeological finds are exhibited here.

At the very foot of the Chaillot, on the site of the former quarries, there is a public aquarium CineAqua, a powerful magnet for children. It is one of the ten most modern aquariums in the world. Underwater shows are regularly held here. Visitors can walk along underwater corridors surrounded by sea creatures.
