Photo and description

Lake Veljo is one of the largest and most beautiful lakes in the northwestern part of Russia, located in the Novgorod region, on the territory of the Valdai National Park. The lake is surrounded by amazing, majestic, pristine nature.

Veljo is a lake of glacial origin, stretched along the Valdai moraine ridge, as a result, the terrain has a wavy, heterogeneous character, and the water in the lake is distinguished by incomparable purity and transparency. There is an opinion that you can drink water directly from the lake, especially since there are no large agricultural producers here, and there is no industry either.

The lake is stretched from north to south. Its length is more than 25 km, hilly high banks are heavily indented. The banks and the bottom are covered with sand in places with silt. The average depth is 9-10 m, the depth difference, according to studies in 2004, ranges up to 42 m. The lake is rich in large and small islands of various origins and sizes, there are about 200 of them. For example, in the eastern part of the lake there are floating land areas up to 100 m across

Veljo freezes in late November - early December, and in late April - early May is freed from ice

Several small rivers flow into the lake. In the western part of the lake, across the Yavon River, the natural runoff is partially blocked by a dam. Therefore, the water level in the lake is several meters higher. A certain volume of Veljo water enters the Vyshnevolotsk water system through an artificial canal in the eastern part of the lake into the Libya River, Lake Shlino and the Shlina River.

There are many different fish in the lake, and accordingly, you can enjoy fishing here. Veljo is rich in pike, bream, pike perch, perch, carp and more than 20 species of fish.

The history of Lake Veljo goes back centuries and contains a huge amount of amazing information and legends. For example, one of them says that UFOs appear here quite often. What is the reason for the concentration of unusual phenomena in this area - one can only guess. Maybe this is somehow connected with the natural resources of the region or its history, or maybe this quiet lake is attractive to extraterrestrial intelligence because it is not crowded and calm.

The magic, unique beauty of these places is created birch groves, dense spruce forests and light pine forests. These ancient forests are home to many beasts. Here you can hunt for a bear, elk, wild boar, as well as for different birds.

The climate is mild, temperate continental, close to the sea, and has healing properties. Summers are usually sunny and warm, winters are snowy and mild. In summer, the water in the lake can warm up to 25 °. At this time, it is good to swim and sunbathe on clean, secluded beaches. During the winter months, it is a playground for winter fishing enthusiasts as well as skiing fans. Autumn is the most elegant and colorful season in Veljo. At this time, the local forests are rich in mushrooms and berries.

The area around the lake is a sparsely populated, remote and mysterious place, a corner of pristine nature. There is no city bustle or a huge number of tourists. Kind and calm people live in these places. Only the northern and western shores of the lake are inhabited. Several villages are spread here, which have a couple of shops and a fish farm. The eastern and southern shores are inaccessible by car, they can only be reached by water, there are very few houses, and behind them, a wild forest is visible on an endless space, which allows you to enjoy solitude and tranquility.

Lake Veljo is visited by people for various reasons. Someone enjoys excellent fishing and hunting, someone - the long-awaited peace and quiet, and someone is attracted here by artifacts or ancient legends that can be heard from local old-timers.
