The creation of this monument was entrusted to Giuseppe Sacconi and began in 1885, and its opening took place only in 1911. This grandiose monument was to serve the glorification of Italy after its reunification. It is executed in monumental classical forms, dictated by the patriotic sentiments of the time. The heart of the monument is the Altar of the Motherland with the majestic statue of Rome, the silent guard of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Nearby there is an equestrian statue of Victor Emmanuel II and a plate on which the text of the news of the victory of 1918 is engraved.
