Kefalonia can be reached from Lefkada by ferry service, or by boat from Ithaca. Not far from the port city of Sami, near the Karavomylos lake, there is the Melissanian stalagmite cave.

Inside the cave there is an underground lake, and you can get into it only by boat. The cave was discovered relatively recently, about 100 years ago, and regular excursions have been arranged here since 1963.

`` Age '' The cave is estimated at approximately 15   000,000 years. This unique natural landmark is of great interest to tourists arriving in Kefalonia.
